Newry Head of the River 2025 – Race Report

One of the Novice Women’s 8’s after their race

On the 1st of February the novice squad took part in Newry Head of the River, entering one boat in the Novice Menโ€™s 8+ category and two boats in the Club Womenโ€™s 8+. Inclement conditions on the canal saw the course shortened to 3km in the first division, where all of QUBโ€™s boats were racing, and increased the demand for skilful oarsmanship and resilience.

The menโ€™s crew placed sixth overall with a time of 9:44.5 and the two womenโ€™s crews took second and third places respectively in their category with times of 10:46.1 and 11:23.0, yielding overall results of 17th and 34th.

With BUCS Head drawing near, the racing experience gained in Newry will prove most useful as our crews prepare for racing on the Tyne, which has proved over the past few years that it can be temperamental weather-wise.
