Lagan Head 2008

20080224 Lagan HeadThis week focused towards Lagan Head. The event was a great one with a near record entry of over 200. We were joined by crews from Bann, Commercial, Glasgow University, Trinity, UCD to name a few, and also our neighbours and hosts of the event BRC. Great thanks must be made to BRC for all their effort in organising the event and for the video coverage they provided. It proved one of the finest Lagan Heads in recent years, both to watch and participate in. Conditions for the event were much better than the forecast had predicted and luckily the rain held off for most of the day, providing almost ideal conditions for racing.

Race 1 kicked off at 10 am for the smaller boats. Queens entered in the N4+, I4x, I4- and S2- classes. Promising performances were put in by all crews with the N4+ and the I4x winning in their respective classes. Congratulations to all the guys who participated and to the two winning crews, with the novice 4 retaining the title from last year.

In the second race QUBBC entered boats in the intermediate 8, novice 8 and inter 4 classes. The novice and intermediate classes this year had a particularly high entry, with seven crews in the intermediate class and six in the novice class. The intermediate eight put in a strong performance but were fought into third place by a very strong performance by UCD and were narrowly beat for second place by Commercial by a margin of only 3 seconds. The intermediate four also put in a good performance but were unfortunately beaten into second place by Neptune. The novice eight won their class convincingly by a margin of over one minute to second place UCD with Trinity finishing closely behind in third position. Congratulations to the novice 8 crew on their performance and for bringing the novice 8 title to Queens for the first time since 2001.

QUBLBC won the Intermediate 8, Novice 8’s and 4’s, the Senior Quad and Senior Pair.

All in all a promising weekends performance for Queens. A hard week of training now lies ahead in preparation for Erne Head next weekend. Hopefully the weather holds up again, for this one of Ireland’s finest Head races.
