Lagan Head 2010 – Results Race 1

The small boats took to the water in Race one of the day. Queen’s ladies raced in both the novice and intermediate coxed fours. The women’s novice four put in a fantastically strong performance to top their category in a time of 12:54.2. Their time was good enough to beat the intermediate four by eight tenths of a second, despite the Queen’s intermediate four also winning their category. The novice ladies have already made their mark on the club, fighting hard for those all important seats.

Race two got underway at 14:30, with the top senior men’s eight leading the pack. UCDBC and Neptune participated against three Queen’s eights. The ‘A’ crew won the race in a time of 14:37.0, 31 seconds ahead of Queen’s ‘B’ crew who finished second place. UCDBC fell 7 seconds short of the ‘B’ crew, finishing third ahead of Neptune. A notable performance was the Bann Junior 18 VIII, who finished fifth in a staggering time of 15:40.4.

The men’s novice VIII finished third in their category in a time of 17:51.1, 48 seconds behind winners UCD. The novice men received their first bitter taste of racing and should now begin to realise the commitment needed to compete at varsity level. For the second time in one day, the novice ladies put in a convincing performance, winning the novice eights by 70 seconds over second-placed DUBC. The ‘B’ crew finished a tight third ahead of Commercial ladies. This put an end to a successful days racing for Queen’s rowing.

The next race for Queen’s rowing will be Erne Head on March 13th in Enniskillen. Queen’s welcomes support from friends, family and past-rowers.
