Queen’s University Belfast has been invited to take part in this Saturday’s (4th Sept) International University “Golden Boat” Regatta in Moscow.
This prestigious regatta is unlike any other, being held in the frame of Moscow City Day along a 7.5km stretch of the Moskva River. Invites are to the best University crews in respective countries. This year Queen’s will test their mettle against Cambridge (of the back of their 2010 Boat Race victory), current “Golden Boat” champions the University of Pavia (Italy) and the top university crews from Germany, Poland, Estonia, Croatia, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia.
Five of the crew return to the water, having recently taken bronze in the World University Championships in Szeged, Hungary. However, the distance they are due to race is an untimely challenge to say the least and should provide some interesting results.
The winners of the event receive the Golden Boat Challenge Cup and a ‘valuable prize’, the details of which are yet to be revealed.
We wish the Queen’s crew the very best of luck in what will surely be a memorable racing occasion.
