Queen’s University Belfast delivered an outstanding performance at BUCS Head 2025, one of the most prestigious university rowing events in the UK, held in Newcastle. The event, originally planned as a two-day competition, was cut short due to adverse weather conditions, leading to the cancellation of Sunday’s races. As a result, the novice eights had the opportunity to race the full 5km course on Saturday, while the novice fours and quads were unable to compete. Despite these challenges, QUB rose to the occasion with remarkable results, securing an impressive seven medals across various categories.
The standout performance came from the men’s beginner eight, who not only achieved victory but also claimed the title of British University Champions, highlighting their hard work so far this season. Their dominant display earned them the gold medal, marking a significant achievement for the squad. Meanwhile, the men’s championship quadruple scull delivered a strong performance, securing a silver medal in an extremely competitive field. They were joined on the podium by the men’s lightweight intermediate quad, whose technical skill and endurance also earned them a well-deserved silver.
On the women’s side, the beginner eight made a splash by securing a bronze medal in their category. The success continued with the women’s championship lightweight coxless four, who earned another bronze for QUB. The same crew also competed in the lightweight intermediate quad and fought hard to secure another third-place finish and add to the medal tally. Rounding off the medal haul was the men’s championship lightweight coxless four, who demonstrated impressive strength and cohesion to bring home yet another bronze.
Despite the weekend’s schedule disruption, Queen’s showcased their depth and talent, setting themselves up for a strong rest of the season. With impressive performances across multiple categories; QUB’s rowers have firmly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with on the national stage.
