Ramada Plaza Belfast University Boat Race 2012
2012 saw another successful year for Queen’s University on home water. The new regatta enclosures combined with large crowds on the banks and great weather meant a fantastic day was had by all racers and spectators. The Novice Women started the winning streak in the Fresher race by beating Methody by 1 length. The race was close the whole way, with Methody making the last bend in the course work for them, but in the end Queen’s held on for the win. The Fresher Mens’ race was the least competitive of the day when within the first 250m Queen’s had clear water, increasing their advantage to over 5 lengths by the finish line. In the alumni race, the Queen’s Alumni club, Lady Victoria, beat a BBC/BRC composite by a short canvas to win the shortened 500m event.
The Senior Womens’ race was the closest and most entertaining race of the day. Both crews had a strong start but Queen’s pulled out a half length lead by the 500m mark, having to work very hard to maintain their advantage. The Cambridge ladies didn’t let Queen’s get away and the middle 1000m of the race saw Queen’s having to hold off a number of strong Cambridge pushes. The Queen’s eight, put together just for this race, held their composure and put in a strong finish to win by one-and-a-half lengths.
The Queen’s Senior Men had a clean and crisp start to their battle with Cambridge, and once the Queen’s Men pulled out a half length lead at the 750m mark, the result never looked in doubt. The Mens team took the win and gave Queen’s their 5th victory in the University Boat Race series, now in its ninth year.
