With the beginning of the new rowing season for 2012-2013, comes recruitment and over the past two weeks Queen’s Rowing has been out in full force across campus recruiting new students.
In between their own training and the first classes of their new term, from September 17th returning athletes to the club have been at Elms Village, the Student’s Union and the PEC promoting rowing. The key recruitment days were the ‘Come and Try It’ mornings on the Saturdays of September 22nd and 29th and the Freshers Fair on Wednesday, September 26th.
Queen’s Rowing has also represented itself at the Schools Open Days on the 7th and 8th of September, aiming for junior rowers considering coming to study and row at Queen’s.
Both the men’s and women’s clubs have seen strong numbers of students coming down on the ‘Come and Try It’ mornings to give Rowing a go and this is a testament to the efforts put in by the entire club over the recruitment period.
The next few weeks will see the resumption of standard training for returning rowers at Inter and Senior level, as well as of course the welcoming of new students into the club fold. This will involve social events and fundraisers to allow both current and new squads to get to know one another as we train together. Queen’s rowingwill be moving in an exciting direction all under the guidance of Head Coach Mick Desmond and under the leadership of Club Captains, Rebecca McGookin and Andy Little.
Upcoming dates include the Inspiration for Sport Day, where an exposition of the university and the rowing club will be held for interested junior rowers considering coming to Queen’s.
It’s an exciting time for Queen’s Rowing and we hope that you will be a part of it.
